Thank you, Mr. President

Sept 11, 2001 shocked our nation. We knew very quickly that we had been attacked on U.S. soil by terrorists. At the time, most everyone believed it was only a matter of time before the next attack. Seven years later, we haven't had another terrorist attack like we all feared.

Plots have been foiled over the last seven years. Some of them have been very public. There are untold numbers that have been foiled without the public ever hearing about them.

The number one job of the President is to protect the citizens of the United States from her enemies. The future will judge President Bush. Today, we should all pause and thank him for the job he has done over the last seven years.

Thank you, Mr. President.

Thank you president bush, for protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

None of your links change the fact that we haven't had a major terrorist attack on U.S. soil in seven years. We have been so safe here in the United States that many have forgotten 9/11.

The next President, whether it be Obama or McCain, must put the safety of the United States above all other issues. The Commander in Chief is responsible for protecting our nation. I hope the next President is as successful as Bush has been so far.

Civilians die in War, ask the 2800 people who died in the WTC... oh wait, they are dead so you can't. Oh yeah, they don't matter because they are evil Americans and probably deserved it because they earned a nice living, supported their families and lived life to the fullest. Allah forbids that, right anonymous? "America's chickens are coming home to roost" (Rev. Jeremy Wright) I believe is the correct quote, is that what you believe?

Soldiers die in war, also! They know that risk but they love their country in a way you will never understand, anonymous. I have a sister who just got back from Iraq, a nephew who was in Iraq, a niece who is currently deployed in South Korea, and a father who served in the Korean War. All willing to make the necessary sacrifices to protect us, you included, from the evils that want to take everything we have away.

The President has failed the citizens of this country in many areas... however, he has performed his number one duty well. So I say...

Thank you Mr. George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, for protecting us.

It is a very horrible thing when people die, especially innocent people.

I am kind of getting tired of hearing how Bush is a monster because innocent people die in Afgan. and Iraq. What about the thousands of innocents who died on Sept 11, 2001? What about the innocents who died on Dec 7, 1941? What about the millions of innocents who died in Europre during WW2? What about the innocents who die everyday around the world, by the thousands, in China, Indonesia, and other places that have nothing to do with the US?

Bush is the President of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! His job is to protect Americans, he is not the president of the World.

How much of a monster would he be if he did nothing after Sep 11, and as a result your family or friends had been killed?

I am thankful that my life, my liberty, and my pursuit of happiness has remained.

I am not a George Bush supporter, but I am grateful that we have not had another terrorist attack on U.S. soil, and I'm willing to give him his due for that.

That does not validate, nor does it excuse, the fact that we invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 -- and have lost more lives there than on 9/11. Maybe if we'd had a different President in 2001, we would have actually caught the guy responsible.

Andy, I think you're wrong when you say many have forgotten 9/11. We can't live in fear of it happening again, so we have simply gone about living our lives, trusting (hoping) that we are being protected by those who learned valuable lessons from the mistakes made before 9/11.

Andy:

I have to take exception with your statement, "There are untold numbers that have been foiled without the public ever hearing about them." You have no idea as to the truth of that statement do you?

No terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 9/11?

I would guess that when someone sickens and kills people by sending Anthrax through the mail, making it the most serious biological attack in U.S. history, we're talking terror attacks.

And. Uh-oh. That was our own government, using our own WMD.

Thanks President Bush.

Andy D said...

Anon,

Are you really trying to claim the U.S. Government used Anthrax on U.S. Citizens as an attack?

Surely you aren't that gullible.

Andy D said...

Senior Lady,

Thank you for the candor regarding Bush. I had no intention of launching into a rehash of the reasons for the Iraq war on this post. I simply wanted to express my gratitude to the President for protecting us for seven years.

I really hope I am wrong and that people have not forgotten 9/11. We should live with an acknowledgement that it can happen again, and that there are people out there who want much, much worse. To pretend there aren’t terrorists out there who want to kill us puts as at danger. I think many people have forgotten, or maybe have chosen to ignore, what 19 terrorist did that day.

I am sorry that you take exception with my statement. I know that statement to be a very safe assumption. There have been at least four or five plots that have been foiled that are public knowledge. There have been court cases involving other suspects that hint at other plots. I assume that if there are any we know about, then there are some we don’t know about.

I use untold here in its literal definition, untold meaning unknown or unrevealed. Hope that helps, but let me know if I need to clarify it further.

I'm not claiming that the anthrax terror attacks were conducted by U.S. military scientists using U.S. anthrax. The U.S. government is claiming that.

U.S. anthrax. U.S. scientist. U.S. attack.

Maybe we should pre-emptively bomb that country, lock up its citizens, and build naked-prisoner pyramids there before they hit us again.

Anonymous said...

But you said there weren't terror attacks since 9/11. Bush kept us safe, you said. That's not true. Can you admit that, Andy?

Andy D said...

I have been talking about a major terrorist attack. We have had incidents like the Virgina Tech shooting, and like the anthrax case you cite that were attacks, but nothing of the scale of 9/11.

After 9/11 most people believed it was only a matter of time before we had another attack of the same scale. We haven't.

The anthrax case was not the U.S. government attacking it's citizens. Even if you are simply trying to be cute, it is irresponsible of you to claim it was. If you are the same Anonymous that claims Mrs. Palin has been lying in other posts, I would think you would be more careful of your words. To say the U.S. Government attacked U.S. citizens with anthrax is a lie, pure and simple.

Anonymous said...

If the Anthrax mail attacks had come from Iran, you people would have been foaming at the mouth for an invasion.

Well, foaming more than you already are.

Basically, you would have said the attacks show how vulnerable we are to "madmen" like Ahmadinejad. But since the attacks were actually carried out by a U.S. government employee, it was all cool. "Thanks, President Bush," and all that.

Kram said...

Lets remember that the terrorist being defined by the subject of this post is a Radical Islamic Fundamentalist. I don't consider the Va. Tech incident terrorism... that was a mentally deranged individual. Personally, I'm not convinced the Anthrax attack was carried out by the Scientist who was being charged. But, lets go with that. Seems to me he had more of a chip on his shoulder than any real "ideology" behind his attack.

Anonymous said...

Kram:

Thanks for clearing that up. What defines "terrorist" isn't what they *DO* it's what *RELIGION* they're part of!

Now we now where to find the terrorists: in mosques! Boy, that was easy. (Don't let the Anthrax in your mail distract you, just focus on the mosques.)

USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

Andy D said...

Anon, you can't possibly be that out of it.

There is a difference between an individual acting on their own vs. a government instructing a group or individual on what to do.

You will notice that Kram used more than just the word "Islam". I don't care what faith someone is until they try to use tenets of that faith to try and kill me and my family.

Are you here to discuss ideals and political thought, or just to try and say "No" to anything someone else posts?

Anonymous said...

Maybe we *do* agree.

When a government tells individuals to torture and bomb innocent people, that'd be terrorism, right?

Mike Ellis, The Jolly Reprobate said...

You offered your opinion that "the number one job of the President is to protect the citizens of the United States from her enemies," but if the Oath of Office is a guide, the president's number one is job is to defend and uphold the Constitution.

If that's the case, then I 'd say this guy has done a poor job.

Andy D said...

Anon,

I think for the most part that is true. There are some nuances. For example, I think most people would construe "innocent people" in your example to mean civilians. I wouldn't consider Sherman's March terrorism, nor would I consider the Atomic bomb in Japan terrorism. The difference in those two cases is that the purpose was to bring a war too a close quicker. Terrorism is typically used to simply strike fear in the hearts of a civilian group in order to subdue them.

Mike,

I would consider protecting the nation, and thereby the Constitution, from enemies "both foreign and domestic", as part of the oath. Because of that, I think President Bush has done a good job.

I have one question from reading all of these comments as well as a bumper sticker.

On 1-21-2009 will the USA and the world become a better place?

Kevin said...

If people truly believe that President Bush is so bad and committed so many "high crimes" why has this democratically controlled congress not brought up those charges and put him on trial?

Perhaps they are more concerned with doing nothing or making our country worse. How good was our country going 2 years ago?

Christina G. said...

Since the 9/11 attacks, so many times I've heard it said that the United States wasn't any safer, security wasn't that much better, etc., etc. and I would always think, "Huh????" What are these people talking about? What planet are they living on?

The more I read and learn about radical Islam ideology, threats, nuclear plans etc., the more I am in awe of the fact that, so far, we have remained safe from them here in our country. That is no accident.

I am so grateful for a President who took this very real danger extremely seriously.

Pack:
Your question about 1/29/2009 -- are you making an assumption that Obama is going to win the election? Or do you have doubts that either man can live up to George Bush? I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

Anonymous said...

Pack: some of us are trying. I support Pres. Bush's right to a fair trail.

But it's often the same old story.

You excuse Bush because *Democrats* haven't put him behind bars?

Do you blame the LA County prosecutors for murders OJ Simpson committed?

I blame OJ.

Imagine what OJ could have gotten away with if he had executive privilege.

Andy D said...

I don't excuse President Bush because the Democrats haven't tried to charge him, I don't believe President Bush has committed any impeachable offenses.

The Democrats in Congress haven't tried to impeach him for the same reason. They like to say on the campaign trial that he lied and that he broke the law. The truth of the matter is they know he hasn't.

Kevin said...

I am not excusing him. I never said that I was. People are claiming he is doing all sorts of bad things and illegal things and over stepping his bounds as President. We have a checks and balance system that is suppose to keep this in check. Either the congress has no interest in using their power or there is no need for the power to be used. It is not an excuse it is a fact.
As for OJ. He was found not guilty by a jury of his peers. End of story.

I don't think things will get better the day after Bush's last day because I do not believe he is the source of all of our "problems." So no worries here.

Anonymous said...

What are some of the specific charges against President Bush? I miss alot, am unaware of much that goes on in gov't. People say this, and people say that, but what laws is he accused of breaking? Anyone?

Anonymous said...

An overview of most of Bush's suspected and known criminal acts can be found here. Follow further links to get the background.

Hope this helps!

Andy D said...

I don't see anything in there that counts as "known criminal activity". Most of it is stuff that you may not agree with, which is fine. Concerned citizens can have differing views on the actions of their Representatives. However, I don't see any impeachable offense in the list. However, I encourage my readers to review the article so they can see just how flimsy the case for impeachment is.
